How Do Laser Printers Work?

It is one of those things that most of us really dont think about. How does a laser printer work? Well, you click print?and it works, right? For most of us that is all we need to know or would care to know. But, in reality, it is something you should an understanding of if you are going to be buying a laser printer for the office network or shelling out a decent amount of cash.

Chemistry isnt that bad

Most people have horror stories about chemistry class, me included. But when it comes to figuring out how a laser printer and chemistry work together it is not all that bad. Whether it is a HP, Epson, Cannon or Dell laser printer it works the same way, positive charges and negative charges. The old saying actually applies, opposites attract.

Getting charged

Within the laser printer there is a drum that slowly turns. As it turns it is given a charge by a wire (charge corona wire) or, in some cases, another roller. After the drum is charged the printer shoots a laser at the surface of the drum discharging the drum in certain places. These places end up looking like letters and numbers on the drum.

To get these discharged letters and number shapes off the drum and onto a piece of paper the laser printer covers the discharged shapes with charged toner. It then hooks them up with an oppositely charged piece of paper. As makes sense the toner is attracted to the paper and there it is, toner on paper. If you have ever changed a toner cartridge you can attest that the stuff loves to attach itself to just about anything. The process so far just makes the toner attach itself in an ordered fashion or letter and numbers.

Getting toned

The process is just about complete at the most basic level. What needs to happen to finish off the process is for the toner to be fused into the paper permanently. To accomplish this the laser printer rolls the paper by a heat roller to melt the toner into the fibers of the paper. As the laser printer does this it real eases the charge with yet another roller.

Ultimately, when the process is in synch there is no muss and no mess. But everything needs to be timed just right. In the end, there is a warm static free piece of paper with all the words fit and unfit to print.

Broadband - Crackdown On Illegal Downloads

Since the introduction of file-sharing and peer-to-peer networking, there have been constantly reported high profile legal struggles between the music industry and internet providers.

And now internet providers face potential changes to procedure due to a government green paper which would require them to take action over users who access pirated material.

It is estimated that around six million UK broadband users downloaded files illegally last year, with music and film industries claiming that such practices cost billions of pounds in lost revenue.

And with the government coming under increased pressure from those in the music and film industries to penalise piracy, users could find themselves paying the price for free downloads.

Negotiations between some of the biggest ISPs and some of Hollywood's biggest studios regarding a voluntary scheme for policing illegal downloads have been in progress for several years, however no deal has yet been reached.

Users suspected of illegally downloading music and films face the prospect of a 'three strikes and you're out' system, which could ultimately lead to the disconnection of their broadband service if no steps are taken to cease illegal activity.

However there is growing concern about how disputed allegations would be policed. With an increasing number of cases of 'piggybacking' and 'wi-fi hijacking' as the numbers of wireless broadband networks around the UK continues to grow, there could be difficulties in determining blame in some cases.

The green paper also outlines plans for schemes that would promote creative arts in the UK in a bid to encourage children to visit galleries and museums, attend theatre productions and take up study of a musical instrument.

Now not only were more people accessing the internet but they were doing it at speeds faster than ever before. The best thing about high speed internet and DSL is that you could get a router and share the signal among multiple computers. This was great except for the cabling all over the place. Enter the wireless internet connection. Nothing has done more to increase the sale of computers in this country than the wireless internet connection because now we could easily connect multiple computers to the same internet connection without all the cables. Nirvana had been achieved.

A wireless internet connection requires a broadband high speed modem, a router, a wireless access point, and wireless network cards on the computers. Today your wireless connection can be made with a unit that is a combination router and wireless access point which is much easier to configure and cheaper to buy. With the advent of the wireless internet connection internet providers have finally embraced the wireless internet routers. For years providers hated the routers because they felt that if customers wanted multiple connections in their home they should pay for multiple connections. But in the end the "if you can't beat 'em join 'em" mentality won out and now a wireless internet router is a standard piece of equipment with your new wireless internet connection.

Broadband Gets the Whip

In light of new guidelines due to be brought into force early in 2008, broadband providers could face legal action if they do not give accurate information to customers when they sign up. This welcome ruling was put into motion by Ofcom, the technology watchdog.

The rule mainly covers the question of the connection speeds, which there has been some controversy over in recent months. It was discovered that customers were paying for speeds advertised as 'up to' 8MB, 16MB or even 24MB, when in some cases were only getting perhaps a quarter of that.

Providers argued that the 'up to' wording indicated that the advertised speed were only a maximum and not a guarantee, but Ofcom's stance was that it was misleading, and there was too much difference between advertised and actual. They have called for a 'typical' speed to be shown instead - much like the typical APR on credit cards.

The new code states that broadband providers must assess a customers line and give accurate, clear data as to what speed they can expect from their line, provide information about things that can affect line speed, and also contact them two weeks after the service installation to let them know what speed they are getting. If it's significantly lower than the speed originally quoted, the customer has the option of switching free to a different package or backing out of the deal with no penalties incurred.

For most of the broadband users in the UK, this ruling could not have come too soon. When Computeractive magazine did a study back in September 2007 it found that 62% of people who used its speed-testing software were getting less than half the speed advertised by their ISP. For example, on an '8MB' connection, the actual average speed is 2.7Mbps. That's just a third of the speed the customer would be paying for.

It can sometimes make a difference if you pay a higher price. Cheap broadband packages tend to have a higher contention rate, which means you're sharing your bandwidth with more people and therefore getting a slower speed. Paying a higher tariff can sometimes get you a lower contention, but you may need to ask about this as not all providers advertise it.

If you're unhappy with your current connection speed, try and wait until this new ruling comes into force before switching ISP's. You may find you get a faster speed and better deal.

The Penans of Ulu Magoh

During the recent Chinese New Year holidays, I went on a trek with a group of friends into the interior of Sarawak, Malaysia. Our objective was to understand the life and struggle of one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes on earth, the Penans. This trek was inspired by Bruno Manser, the Swiss conservationist who was an activist for Penan rights.

What attracted me to the trip was the spontaneity of it all. It wasn't part of any tour package. It was more like backpacking in the middle of the jungle with elements of adventure, danger and unpredictability thrown in. More so, there was a possibility we would be retracing the steps taken by Bruno Manser during his his involvement with the Penans around the Magoh area.

The plan was to trek from Long Seridan into Ulu Magoh, where we will spend the night. From there, we were to go to Long Balau and then back to Long Seridan.

We arrived in Long Seridan at 11.30am via the twin-otter Maswings flight. Our trek leader secured a guide through his contact in this small Kelabit village. Before setting off, we walked around to take in the sights and sounds of the area.

Long Seridan is the hub that connects the interior settlements to modern facilities. This is the nearest place where people who live in the surrounding forest can seek medical help and education. We visited a local 'rumah sakai', a longhouse accommodation for transient visitors from the interior. The rumah sakai was bare and deplorable, with rubbish strewn all over the place, and child scribblings adorning its dirty walls. There, we met an old Penan lady infected with malaria who came all the way from Ulu Magoh for treatment only to find the medical assistant on annual leave.

After getting our supplies, we went off in the direction of Ulu Magoh at 1 pm. Our guides estimated that we would reach there by 6 pm.

The route took us onto steep hills, treacherous ridges, slippery downhills and river crossings with swift currents. By 5 pm we thought we would already be near to the Penan settlement, but we trekked further on into the forest until 12 am! The guides had underestimated the time it would take for us city slickers to reach the destination. We finally decided to camp by the river because it was already late despite the guides saying the village was very near. We were tired, hungry and aching all over. All we wanted to do was sleep.

At dawn, the Penans came to our campsite to lead us to their settlement. The guides had gone ahead earlier and informed them of our arrival. We had expected a large longhouse at Ulu Magoh, but in fact the settlement consists of three huts built with tree logs held together with rattan strings, and old zinc sheets as roof materials. We spent the whole day here recuperating, and getting to know the friendly semi-nomadic Penans.

The Ulu Magoh settlement was very basic and spartan. There was no electricity, no water supply and no sewerage system. They depend solely on the forest for their needs.

One of our guides turned out to be the daughter of the chieftain, Sayat Magut. Lujan Magut had led us through the forest barefoot. Her stature resembled that of her father: muscular, with wide shoulders and huge hands and feet. We found out that Lujan was refused admission to school in Long Seridan because she suffers from a mild case of epilepsy.

Sayat had eight children but one had died. He later showed us where he had buried his son, which was quite a distance from his settlement. He said he will build a farm around his son's grave soon.

Two of Sayat's daughters, Diana and Remen, attend boarding school in Long Seridan. They were home when we visited. We saw them as very keen to learn as they were doing their schoolwork that evening. What struck me hard was knowing they had to take the tough route we had trekked in order to go to school. That route was tough and dangerous, even for an adult, what more for a mere child. Then I remembered the old lady with malaria from Ulu Magoh. How she must have suffered even further to get treatment for her disease.

When I saw Sayat's youngest, a toddler named Luna, my heart broke. She has been coughing for three months, with nothing more to wear everyday than a small frock.

"We couldn't afford treatment for her," said Sayat, who was proficient in Malay. "We have little money."

With that, we pooled all the medications we had among us: antibiotics, paracetamols and vitamin, and gave the pills to them. Luckily one of the trek member is a doctor.

The Penans at Ulu Magoh very much depend on the forest for their needs. A visit to one of the huts revealed that poisonous blow darts are still being made and used to hunt deer and boar. A glimpse at the simple hearth saw a bowl of half-eaten frogs caught in the nearby river, while at the corner of the hut lay strips of rattans to be weaved into baskets.

As I spent the day observing their simple lifestyle, I cannot help but admire their steadfastness in preserving their way of life. Many other indigenous tribes have resigned to live the modern life and abandon their dependence of the rainforest for sustenance. However, the signs of logging around Magoh are a dark omen for things to come for these hunter-gatherers.

That night as I lay down on my sleeping bag, the smoky aroma of burning firewood permeating permeating through my senses and hearing the soft lilting melody from a homemade guitar playing from a nearby hut, I cannot help but wonder about the future of these semi-nomadic Penans and their nomadic brethren. Must they abandon the rainforest for the sake of progress? It is a must for every human here on earth to strive for modernization? What about those who does not want to? What does fate have in store for them?

The next morning as we were about to head to Long Balau, we said our goodbyes to the hospitable people of Ulu Magoh. Indeed, they had very little, but they had shared with us what they had without any reservations. Even with such basic necessities, we felt comfortable and welcomed.
